The India Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology adopted the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 which include the requirement for "significant social media intermediaries" to moderate content and block access if it is unlawful under any law or in relation to the interest of the sovereignty and integrity of India, the security of the state, the friendly relations with foreign States, public order, decency or morality. In case of an emergency where "no delay is acceptable", the Rules give the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting the authority to block content accessible through any computer resource.
