Description

Closed Competition Authority investigation into CMI for alleged anti-competitive practices

On 31 October 2024, Morocco's Competition Authority, in collaboration with representatives from Banque Al Maghrib, concluded its investigation into the Interbank Monetary Center (CMI) and the practices within the electronic card payment market. The investigation was initiated under Article 33 of Law 104-12 on price freedom and competition and focused on payment terminals (TPE) and e-commerce. Following a review, including a public consultation that ended without any objections to the proposed commitments, the Competition Authority unanimously accepted structural and behavioural commitments from CMI and its shareholder banks. These commitments address competition concerns and enhance market functionality by ensuring fair, transparent, and non-discriminatory access to digital payment services. CMI and shareholder banks committed to reporting regularly on the implementation of these measures.
