On 13 November 2024, the National Privacy Commission (NPC) announced an independent investigation into the alleged unauthorised transactions affecting GCash user accounts. GCash, a mobile payment platform, confirmed there was no data leakage or personal data breach in connection with the incident. The investigation, in line with the NPC’s mandate under the Data Privacy Act of 2012 (DPA), aims to verify the absence of a personal data breach and ensure the protection of user information. The NPC also clarified that monetary issues related to the transactions should be directed to the appropriate financial regulatory authority.
