On 14 November 2024, X (formerly Twitter) filed a lawsuit against the Attorney General and Secretary of State of California concerning the Defending Democracy from Deepfake Deception Act of 2024 (Assembly Bill 2655), citing an alleged violation of First Amendment protections for free speech. The Bill requires X to create a reporting system enabling the removal and alteration of "materially deceptive content" about political candidates, election officials, and elected officers on the platform. X sought a preliminary injunction against the Bill, stating it would lead to the state determining what content would appear on the platform rather than the platform making the decision. X cited this as a First Amendment violation.
