On 30 September 2024, the Data Governance Act (DGG) implementing the EU Regulation 2022/868 on European Data Governance was introduced to the Parliament of Germany. It would designate the German Federal Network Agency as the authority responsible for overseeing data intermediation services and enforcing regulatory compliance. Additionally, the Federal Statistical Office would support public agencies in managing data reuse. Public agencies would need to provide the necessary data to support these tasks while maintaining independence. The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs would set technical and organisational standards for secure data handling. The law would establish communication, oversight, and enforcement measures, including fines for non-compliance and an electronic communication mandate. Specific sections of the law would apply gradually until 2025.
