On 12 November 2024, the European Commission and the Consumer Protection Cooperation (CPC) Network issued an interim ruling against Apple, addressing alleged geo-blocking practices on its media services, such as the App Store, Apple Arcade, Music, and iTunes Store. These practices were found to restrict consumers based on their place of residence, potentially breaching the Geo-blocking Regulation and the Services Directive. The investigation noted limitations in accessing app interfaces, payment options tied to account registration location, and the inability to download apps from other European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area countries. Apple has been given one month to respond and propose remedies. If the company fails to address the identified concerns, national consumer authorities may proceed with enforcement actions to ensure compliance. The Commission noted that the investigation is part of EU initiatives aimed at removing unjustified barriers within the Single Market and safeguarding consumer rights under applicable EU laws.
