Australia: Closed ACCC investigation into Getty Images over alleged misleading iStock subscription cancellation charges

Description

Closed ACCC investigation into Getty Images over alleged misleading iStock subscription cancellation charges

On 1 November 2024, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) closed its investigation into Getty Images regarding allegations of misleading charges for cancelling iStock subscriptions. The ACCC's concerns were centred around charges imposed between November 2023 and February 2024, which were found to be higher than those stated in the iStock online terms and conditions. Specifically, customers were charged 50 per cent of the remaining cost of their annual subscription for cancellations after a one-month free trial, a fee that exceeded reasonable administrative costs. Following the investigation, Getty Images committed to refunding approximately AUD 78,000 (approx. USD 50’000) to over 200 affected customers and has made amendments to its iStock website to clearly state total prices and key subscription terms. The ACCC has decided not to take further enforcement action, acknowledging Getty Images' responsiveness to both customer feedback and the ACCC's concerns.
