Description

Adopted follow-up declaration on data scraping and privacy

On 28 October 2024, a coalition of 17 global data protection authorities, including from New Zealand, Canada, Australia, China, Argentina and the UK, among others, issued a follow-up statement on data scraping. The statement builds on a joint statement by the authorities in August 2023 urging social media platforms to implement safeguards against data scraping. The statement specifies additional requirements, including that companies must comply with data protection laws when using personal information to develop Artificial Intelligence large language models. It also mandates the deployment of a combination of safeguarding measures, with regular reviews and updates to keep pace with evolving scraping techniques and technologies. Additionally, organisations are required to ensure that any permissible data scraping for commercial or socially beneficial purposes is conducted lawfully and adheres to strict contractual terms.
