Issued joint statement on a common international approach to age assurance

On 24 October 2024, the data protection authorities of Canada, the Philippines, Gibraltar, Mexico, the UK, and Argentina published a joint statement on a common international approach to age assurance through the International Age Assurance Working Group. The objective of the statement is to establish international standards for age verification in digital environments, with the aim of ensuring the protection of children and adolescents. The statement delineates a set of shared principles to guide the commercial and industrial sectors operating online in verifying users' ages, adapting user experiences accordingly, and enforcing age restrictions when required by law. Age assurance entails the verification of a user's age range, enabling the tailoring of their online experience or the imposition of age-appropriate access restrictions, thereby safeguarding children's personal information.
