On 16 October 2024, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) launched an inquiry into the implementation of the Online Safety Act. The inquiry focuses on ensuring online platforms implement risk assessments for illegal content, particularly harmful materials such as hate speech and disinformation, and robust protections for children against harmful content such as pornography and self-harm material. The DSIT highlighted supporting the Office of Communications (Ofcom) enforcement of the obligations under the Act and requested updates on disinformation following civil unrest in July and August 2024.
