Description

Issued findings following inquiry into UK-EU Data Adequacy

On 22 October 2024, the House of Lords European Affairs Committee wrote to the Secretary of State outlining conclusions and recommendations from their inquiry into UK-EU data adequacy. The inquiry, launched in March 2024, was driven by the June 2025 expiry of the European Commission’s decisions granting the UK data adequacy status under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Law Enforcement Directive (LED). The inquiry examined the utility of current arrangements, potential challenges, and implications of losing adequacy status while addressing broader international issues. The Committee recommends the government prioritise securing adequacy renewal from the European Commission in 2025 to avoid economic and administrative burdens, and to engage early with EU stakeholders to ensure a positive outcome.
