On 15 November 2024, the European Commission closes its public consultation on the draft implementing regulation on the establishment of a scientific panel of independent experts in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). The draft would establish rules for creating a scientific panel of independent experts to support the enforcement of the EU’s AI regulation (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689). The panel would consist of up to 60 experts chosen through a public call, ensuring multidisciplinary expertise, geographical representation, and gender balance. These experts will serve two-year terms, with a focus on independence and impartiality. They will advise on AI-related matters, issue qualified alerts, and help Member States enforce the AI regulation. Furthermore, the panel will be supported by the AI Office and the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, which will provide secretarial assistance. Transparency will be ensured by making the experts' information and the panel's work publicly accessible. Moreover, experts would be compensated for their work, and their travel expenses reimbursed.
