Announced Ministry of Domestic Trade inquiry into strengthening e-commerce consumer protection legal framework

On 27 June 2024, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) in Malaysia announced the initiation of an inquiry aimed at reinforcing the legal framework governing e-commerce. The inquiry seeks to address and protect consumer interests and rights more effectively. The decision follows the receipt of 19,937 complaints on the KPDN platform up to 31 May, with 5,094 of these pertaining to e-commerce transactions. The review will consider amendments to several acts under KPDN's purview, including the Consumer Protection Act 1999 and the Electronic Commerce Act 2006, to enhance consumer protection and rights. The study's findings, incorporating feedback from the e-commerce merchant community, will guide the potential creation of specific legislation or amendments to existing acts.
