Adopted FPB Notice requiring registration and classification of film and game distributors and exhibitors

On 25 January 2024, the Film and Publication Board adopted a Notice requiring registration and classification of film and game distributors and exhibitors. The notice applies to distributors and exhibitors of films and games in South Africa. It mandates that all individuals and businesses distributing or exhibiting films and games must be registered with the Board within 30 days from the adoption of the notice. The notice also requires the businesses to pay the prescribed fee and submit unclassified content for examination, while, additionally providing for the possibility of self-classification. The notice emphasises that failure to comply with the notice may incur fines of up to ZAR 150'000 or imprisonment for up to eight months.
