Description

Closed FCO investigation into Facebook over excessive data processing as breach of competition law

On 10 October 2024, the Federal Cartel Office (FCO) closed its investigation into Meta (formerly Facebook). The investigation mandated changes in user data processing practices, particularly regarding the combination of user data from Facebook with data from other Meta services and third-party sources without explicit user consent. As a result of negotiations with the FCO, Meta has introduced new consent processes and tools, such as the Accounts Center and business tools control, enabling users in Germany to manage the linkage of their data across Meta's services and third-party apps and websites more effectively.
