Adopted G7 Digital Competition Communiqué

On 4 October 2024, the G7 competition authorities and policymakers adopted a digital competition communiqué to address competition concerns arising from the rapid development and deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly focusing on generative AI models and algorithms. The statement recognises that certain characteristics of generative AI can contribute to the concentration of market power and the limitation of competition and innovation, and sets out a number of specific competition concerns. In response to these concerns, the statement sets out a series of guiding principles, including the importance of ensuring fair competition, equitable access to key inputs, fostering consumer choice, promoting interoperability among systems, and encouraging innovation and accountability within the AI ecosystem. The statement also sets out a commitment for protect competition in AI markets and proactively address competition risks.
