European Union: Signed European Commission - Canada agreement on transfer of passenger name records data

On 4 October 2024, the Commissioner of Home Affairs of the European Commission signed an agreement with Canada on the transfer of passenger name records (PNR) data to enhance law enforcement cooperation between the EU and Canada. The agreement applies to airlines operating flights between the European Union and Canada. The agreement seeks to facilitate the exchange of passenger information and strengthen efforts to combat terrorism and serious crimes. It imposes obligations that allow for data exchange while ensuring high standards for security, privacy, and data protection. The agreement awaits the consent of the European Parliament and Council to enter into force.
