On 13 April 2023, the Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA) closed its public consultation on the draft of the Artificial Intelligence Promotion and Support Act. The Act would establish a robust framework to promote and support AI innovation in the country. Furthermore, the Act focuses on creating an AI ecosystem through public-private collaboration, establishing AI Innovation Testing Centers, and facilitating research and development. In addition, it outlines the importance of a data-sharing system and sets standards for AI technology, including data handling, risk assessment, and AI contract regulations to ensure consumer safety and transparency. The Act acknowledges the growing significance of AI in the ASEAN region and seeks to position Thailand as a leader in AI adoption. Moreover, it addresses the legal implications and potential liabilities associated with AI systems, suggesting that if AI technology evolves to a stage where it can assume rights and responsibilities, new laws might be needed to define its legal status. Finally, the Act emphasises supporting businesses in AI adoption, minimising regulatory barriers, and preparing for future challenges as AI continues to develop.
