Description

Announced DoJ Designation of Coimisiún na Meán for EU Terrorist Content Online Regulation Enforcement in Ireland

On 28 September 2024, the Irish Department of Justice (DoJ) announced the designation of Coimisiún na Meán as the competent authority in Ireland for imposing penalties under the EU Terrorist Content Online Regulation (2021/784). This authority enables Coimisiún na Meán to levy administrative fines on hosting service providers, including messaging services, e-commerce platforms, and platforms hosting user-generated content, who fail to comply with their obligations under the regulation. Fines can reach up to 4 per cent of the global turnover for infringements. This move follows the enactment of Part 7 of the Courts, Civil Law, Criminal Law and Superannuation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2024, equipping Coimisiún na Meán with the necessary statutory powers.
