Closed CMA investigation into partnership between Amazon and Anthropic (Phase 1 investigation)

On 27 September 2024, the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced the closure of its merger inquiry regarding the partnership between Amazon and Anthropic (phase 1 investigation). The CMA initially launched its investigation into the partnership between Amazon and Anthropic PBC to advance generative artificial intelligence, with Amazon becoming Anthropic’s main cloud provider for certain workloads, including agreements for purchasing computing capacity and commitments to make Anthropic models available on Amazon Bedrock. In its assessment, the CMA considered whether the partnership created a relevant merger situation. It found that, because Anthropic's turnover did not exceed GBP 70 million and the parties' share of supply did not amount to 25% in the UK, no relevant merger situation was created, dispensing with the need for further investigation.
