On 9 April 2024, the Kids Online Safety Act 2024 was introduced at the United States House of Representatives. The Act proposes that social media platforms must offer minors options to safeguard their data, turn off addictive features, and opt out of algorithm-based recommendations, with the strongest privacy settings enabled by default. Additionally, the Act would require platforms to provide parents with tools to report harmful behaviour, establish an obligation for platforms to assess, prevent, and mitigate risks to minors, and share data with researchers to study the effects of social media on young users.
