On 19 September 2024, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced the establishment of a new program focused on the cybersecurity and privacy of artificial intelligence (AI) and the use of AI for cybersecurity and privacy purposes. This new program would address the emerging risks and challenges posed by the widespread adoption of AI technologies across various sectors. The program will leverage NIST's existing expertise, research, and publications to improve standards, guidelines, tools, and practices for managing cybersecurity and privacy in the age of AI. The program seeks to understand how AI developments affect cybersecurity and privacy risks, identify necessary adaptations for existing frameworks and guidance, and fill gaps in current resources. The program begins by building a community profile adapting existing frameworks, with an initial focus on risks arising from the use of AI, ways of defending against AI-enabled attacks, and using AI for cyber defence.
