On 20 September 2024, the Department of State of the United States of America adopted the Global AI Research Agenda (GAIRA). The Agenda aims at advancing the implementation of AI-related research beyond the United States borders, and recommends principles, priorities, and practices aimed at enabling safe, secure, and trustworthy development and use of artificial intelligence across various sectors. The Agenda names inclusion and equity, responsible research, and partnership and collaboration as research principles, and points to the US Executive Order 14110, the OECD AI Principles, and the UNGA AI Resolution as relevant documents. The proposed research priorities cover sociotechnical research, inclusive research infrastructure, research to support AI for Global Challenges, and research on AI's global labour market implications. Finally, the Agenda proposes research practices for funders, research ecosystem hubs, and research teams.
