On 24 September 2024, the Artificial Intelligence Civil Rights Act of 2024 was introduced in the United States Senate. The Act seeks to regulate Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms used in decisions in various sectors including employment, banking, healthcare, criminal justice and public services. The Act applies to developers and deployers of such AI algorithms, prohibiting those that discriminate based on protected characteristics or cause disparate impacts. The Act mandates independent pre- and post-deployment audits to identify and mitigate bias, seeks to increase transparency by allowing individuals to appeal algorithmic decisions, and empowers the Federal Trade Commission, state attorneys general, and private individuals to enforce the Act.
