Malaysia: Implemented MCMC directive blocking SMS containing links including user protection measures against online scams

On 2 May 2023, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission confirmed directing all telecommunications operators, including Maxis, CelcomDigi, U Mobile, and Unifi Mobile, to block SMS containing links sent from mobile numbers to combat online scams. The directive applies to telecommunications companies and aims to enhance user protection by prohibiting SMS communications with links. The Order encouraged businesses to transition to app-based or instant messaging platforms for sharing links and required banks and eWallet providers are required to transition from SMS-based Time Passwords (OTPs) to mitigate risks related to spoofing and malware.
