Adopted Pact for the Future, Global Digital Compact, and Declaration on Future Generations

On 22 September 2024, the United Nations adopted the Pact for the Future, Global Digital Compact, and Declaration on Future Generations. The Compact is an initiative which aims to foster enhanced digital cooperation across nations. The Compact focuses on a number of objectives, including improving connectivity and public digital infrastructure, commit to a internet governance and safety, and ensure responsible, equitable, and interoperable data governance. Regarding artificial intelligence (AI), the Compact sets out the objective of a balanced, inclusive, risk-based approach to AI governance based on meaningful participation of all countries and stakeholders. Specifically, the Compact outlines the UN's commitment to establishing an Independent International Scientific Panel on AI, a Global Dialogue on AI Governance, and calls on the development of standards.
