On 6 September 2024, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) published a FAQ on Domain Name Service (DNS) Redirection to Internet Service Provider's local (ISP) DNS. The FAQ explains that the DNS redirection which it is carrying out is a process where internet requests are redirected to an ISP's local DNS server to block access to illegal or harmful websites, such as those related to online gambling, pornography, and scams, in compliance with Malaysian law. According to the MCMC, this initiative aims to "enhance online safety" without affecting access to legitimate websites or global services. Users are assured by the regulator that connection speeds and browsing experiences will "remain unaffected". If legitimate sites are inadvertently blocked or harmful content is not blocked, users are encouraged to report these issues to their ISP or MCMC for resolution.
