On 6 September 2024, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) published a joint statement on a common international approach to age assurance. The joint statement is signed by the ICO, alongside privacy regulatory bodies from Gibraltar, the Philippines, Canada, Argentina, and Mexico. The joint statement sets out a number of principles which must be observed to ensure that data protection is safeguarded in the implementation of age assurance. Principles include lawfulness of personal information use, accountability, and an awareness of situations in which self-declaration is not sufficient, as well as possible alternatives to age assurance technology.
