Issued Voluntary AI Safety Standard

On 5 September 2024, the Department of Industry, Science and Resources of Australia published the “Voluntary AI Safety Standard: Guiding safe and responsible use of artificial intelligence in Australia”. The document aims to assist organisations to develop and deploy AI systems in Australia safely and reliably through practical guidance. The Voluntary AI Safety Standard consists of 10 voluntary guardrails applicable throughout the AI supply chain, including transparency and accountability requirements. In particular, the guardrails outline accountability processes, risk management processes, data management measures, evaluation of model performance and monitoring systems, enabling human oversight, informing end-users, processes to challenge AI systems use or outcomes, transparency across organisations, keeping records, and engaging stakeholders.
