European Union: Announced conclusion of DPC lawsuit against X’s processing of personal data for training its AI tool Grok

Description

Announced conclusion of DPC lawsuit against X’s processing of personal data for training its AI tool Grok

On 4 September 2024, the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) announced the conclusion of the proceedings before the Irish High Court filed on 8 August 2024 against X for processing personal data harvested from the public posts of its European Economic Area users between 7 May 2024 and 1 August 2024. The data was initially processed to train X's artificial intelligence tool, Grok. The DPC decided to end the proceedings after X agreed to stop and limit its use of user data on a permanent basis. Additionally, the DPC has requested an opinion from the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) on the extent to which personal data is processed at various stages of the training and operation of an AI model.
