Description

Rejected California Journalism Preservation Act (AB 886)

On 31 August 2023, the California Journalism Preservation Act (AB 886) was rejected by the Assembly of California as it failed to pass before the conclusion of the 2023-2024 legislative session. The Act would have mandated covered online platforms to pay a monthly journalism usage fee to eligible digital journalism providers upon request. Further, covered platforms would have been required the compilation of a list of digital journalism providers and would prohibit the retaliation against such providers for asserting their rights under the Act.
