Description

Opened consultation on Draft Rules to Partially Amend the Enforcement Regulations of the Act on the Protection of Personal Information

On 29 August 2024, the Japanese Government opened a public consultation on Draft Rules to Partially Amend the Enforcement Regulations of the Act on the Protection of Personal Information, which remains open until the 27 September 2024. Specifically, the Draft Rules aim to amend the process for recognising foreign countries with equivalent personal information protection standards for the purpose of facilitating cross-border data transfers. In view of previous amendments to Japan's data protection framework expanding its reach to the public sector, the Draft Rules change the criteria for recognising foreign countries to include rules for both public and private sectors.
