On 19 September 2024, UNESCO closed its consultation on the “Consultation Paper on AI Regulation: Emerging Approaches Across the World”. In particular, the paper aims to contribute to the global discussion about whether and how to regulate the development and use of AI systems, to introduce key concepts of AI regulation, and to present a global landscape of AI regulation. Furthermore, the paper aims to inform on the nine emerging approaches to regulating the value chains of artificial intelligence being considered by legislative bodies around the world, including the principles-based approach, standards-based approach, agile and experimentalist approach, facilitating and enabling approach, adapting existing laws approach, access to information and transparency mandates approach, risk-based approach, rights-based approach, and liability approach. The document concludes with a brief recommendation for policymakers to draft context-specific rules to address their nations' specific needs and challenges.
