On 16 September 2024, the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) closed its consultation on the “Applying 5G Cybersecurity and Privacy Capabilities” white paper series. The guidance is addressed to commercial mobile network operators, potential private 5G network operators, and organisations using and managing 5G-enabled technology. The guidance aims to leverage the 5G standardised security features to provide enhanced cybersecurity capabilities built into the network equipment and end-user devices. Furthermore, it seeks to identify security characteristics of the underlying technologies and components of the supporting infrastructure required to operate a 5G network.
