United States of America: Issued CPUC order permitting WeRide to test driverless vehicles with passengers

On 2 August 2024, the California Public Utilities Commission issued an order permitting WeRide, an autonomous driving technology company, to operate autonomous motor vehicles as a charter-party carrier of passengers within California. The order allows the transportation of passengers in vehicles seating fewer than 16 people. It also imposes various obligations, including mandatory insurance coverage, adherence to the California Vehicle Code, and compliance with relevant safety and operational regulations. The permit is valid until 2 August 2027 and may be extended by a renewal application.
