On 13 August 2024, the Texas Attorney General announced it had filed a lawsuit against General Motors for collecting and selling the private data of over 1.5 million drivers in Texas without their consent. The lawsuit follows the investigation announced on 6 June 2024 into several car manufacturers and their data practices. The investigation determined that General Motors had violated Texas privacy law by using technology in its vehicles to collect, sell, and transfer drivers’ data to third parties, including insurance companies.
