On 22 July 2024, the European Commission published the AI Pact, an initiative designed to help organisations prepare for the implementation of the Artificial Intelligence Act by encouraging voluntary early compliance. In particular, the AI Act, proposed in 2021 and agreed upon in December 2023, aims to establish a comprehensive legal framework for AI in the European Union. Some provisions of the AI Act will take effect immediately after adoption, while others, particularly those concerning high-risk AI systems, will apply after a transitional period. The AI Pact is structured around two pillars. Pillar I focuses on engaging organisations in a network to exchange best practices and provide practical information on the implementation of the AI Act. Pillar II encourages early action towards compliance, increasing transparency and readiness among AI system providers and deployers. Participants share experiences and internal policies through workshops, contributing to a better understanding and preparation for the AI Act. Furthermore, the AI Pact offers benefits to participants by developing a common understanding of the AI Act’s objectives, preparing internally through processes and training, increasing the visibility and credibility of AI safeguards, and building trust in AI technologies.
