On 18 July 2024, the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) of the Republic of Korea announced the adoption of the international standard for evaluating and managing data quality in artificial intelligence (AI) development, officially recognised as ISO/IEC 5259-1:2024. The initiative, led by Korea and approved by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee, introduces a framework aimed at enhancing AI safety and reliability through improved data quality. The standard, developed with significant contributions from the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), is part of a series designed to provide organisations with methodologies for evaluating, managing, and improving data quality specifically for AI applications. The standard aims to support the development of safe AI models, enhance system reliability and facilitate international regulatory compliance, including compliance with the European Union Artificial Intelligence Act.
