Issued PDPC Guide on Synthetic Data Generation

On 15 July 2024, the Personal Data Protection Commission Singapore (PDPC) announced the launch of a Proposed Guide on Synthetic Data Generation aimed at assisting organisations in understanding synthetic data (SD) generation techniques and their potential use cases, especially in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) development. The guide is part of the Privacy Enhancing Technology Sandbox initiative, which includes a checklist of good practices for generating SD to mitigate the risk of re-identification. The initiative notes the growing importance of SD as a privacy-enhancing technology (PET) that not only facilitates AI model training by protecting personal data but also addresses data quantity and quality challenges in AI model training.
