Adopted Christchurch Call to Action To Eliminate Terrorist and Violent Extremist Content Online

On 15 May 2019, the French President and New Zealand Prime Minister signed the “Christchurch Call to Action,” aimed at eradicating terrorist and violent extremist content online. The initiative was developed following the Christchurch attacks on 15 March 2019. The Call highlights the need for a collaborative approach involving governments, civil society, and tech companies to address this issue while preserving a free, open, and secure internet. Under the Call to Action, Governments commit to countering terrorism and extremism through societal resilience, media literacy, and legal enforcement while respecting human rights. They also aim to encourage responsible media coverage and support industry standards to prevent the amplification of extremist content. Online service providers pledge to implement transparent measures to prevent the upload and dissemination of such content, enforce community standards, and use technology to identify and remove harmful material swiftly. They also commit to regular public reporting and reviewing algorithms to mitigate content that promotes extremism.
