Published GPEN Report on deceptive design patterns

On 9 July 2024, the Global Privacy Enforcement Network (GPEN) published a report on deceptive design patterns. The report identifies deceptive design patterns (DDPs) across websites and mobile apps worldwide and highlights pervasive issues where DDPs were employed to influence user decisions regarding privacy. The report emphasized that 97% of reviewed platforms employed at least one DDP, with complex and confusing language in privacy policies, obstruction tactics and interface interference, that alter user's perception and understanding of privacy options, making it challenging to navigate and make informed privacy choices. The report comes out of a sweep which was conducted in conjunction with the International Consumer Protection and Enforcement Network (ICPEN).
