Issued Joint Advisory on state-sponsored Russian media leveraging Meliorator software for disinformation campaigns

On 9 July 2024, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Cyber National Mission Force (CNMF), the Netherlands General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD), the Netherlands Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIVD), the Netherlands Police (DNP), and the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security (CCCS), published a joint advisory warning social media companies about the use of covert AI software 'Meliorator' by Russian state-sponsored actors to spread disinformation. The advisory informs social media companies on how the software creates fake personas, deploys content similar to those of genuine users, mirrors disinformation of other bot personas and amplifies false information. The advisory urges social media companies to utilise the information to detect and eliminate disinformation.
