On 21 June 2024, the Data and Digital Ministers Meeting adopted the National framework for the assurance of artificial intelligence(AI). The framework targets the government's use of AI, establishing practices based on Australia's AI Ethics Principles, including human-centred values, fairness, privacy protection, security, reliability, transparency, and accountability. The framework emphasises the foundational elements of AI assurance, including AI governance, data governance, alignment with AI standards, procurement practices, and a risk-based approach. The elements provide a basis for state and territory governments to develop policies and guidance suited to their operational contexts.
