Announced MCMC order requiring enhanced content moderation measures for TikTok and Meta

On 8 April 2024, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) adopted an order requiring enhanced content moderation measures from TikTok and Meta. The MCMC requested that the platforms adopt a more proactive approach to monitoring and moderating content that may affect the sensitivities related to race, religion, and royalty (3R), as well as combat scams and illegal online gambling. The initiative responds to a significant increase in harmful content online. Platform providers are now required to adhere to platform guidelines and Malaysian laws more strictly, with a focus on improving online safety and the efficiency of algorithms used in detecting harmful content.
