On 3 July 2024, the National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon) issued a request for information to Meta regarding its use of personal data for training Artificial Intelligence (AI). Senacon has raised concerns about the legality of this action, particularly questioning the justification of using legitimate interest for data processing, the absence of a specific purpose, practices that may manipulate consumers and hinder the exercise of their rights, and insufficient provision of information. Senacon asserts that the relationship between Meta and its users falls under consumer protection regulations, specifically governed by the Consumer Protection Code (CDC) and the General Data Protection Law (LGPD) in Brazil. According to Senacon, Meta's practices appear to disregard Brazil's legislative sovereignty and could lead to a sanctioning process.
