United States of America: Announced FCC investigation into T-Mobile over alleged fraudulent robocalls using AI for political purposes

On 27 June 2024, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced an investigation into T-Mobile over alleged fraudulent robocalls. The FCC requested T-Mobile to explain the measures it is implementing to prevent fraudulent robocalls using AI for political purposes. The FCC points out the threat posed by AI-generated voice cloning, which can be used to mislead, scam consumers, and spread misinformation, particularly during elections. Further, the FCC issued a declaratory ruling stating that AI-generated or prerecorded voice robocalls violate the Telephone Consumer Protection Act.
