United States of America: Announced FCC investigation into Lumen over alleged fraudulent robocalls using AI for political purposes

On 27 June 2024, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced an investigation into Lumen over alleged fraudulent robocalls. The FCC requested Lumen to explain the measures it is implementing to prevent fraudulent robocalls using AI for political purposes. The FCC points out the threat posed by AI-generated voice cloning, which can be used to mislead, scam consumers, and spread misinformation, particularly during elections. Further, the FCC issued a declaratory ruling stating that AI-generated or prerecorded voice robocalls violate the Telephone Consumer Protection Act.
