On 27 June 2024, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) opened a public consultation on Google’s exemption application under the Online News Act (formerly Bill C-18) until 29 July 2024. The Online News Act requires online platforms that share Canadian news content to compensate news organisations fairly. It mandates the CRTC to oversee fair negotiations between news organizations and major online platforms. The Act also allows platforms to request an exemption from direct bargaining if they reach an agreement with an organisation representing a broad range of Canadian news organizations.
