Republic of Korea: Implemented Amended Act on the Protection and Use of Location Information (Law No. 18517) including data protection authority governance

On 20 April 2022, the Amended Act on the Protection and Use of Location Information, including data protection authority governance, was implemented. Under the Amended Act, the Korea Communications Commission is empowered to issue penalties of up to 3% of sales for a number of violations of the Act, including failures to take technical and managerial measures, failure to obtain consent, and improper transfer of data to third parties.
