On 24 June 2024, the Artificial Intelligence Law (2/2234), including artificial intelligence authority governance, was introduced in the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye. The Law seeks to establish a comprehensive legal framework covering the development and use of artificial intelligence technologies by laying out general principles and specific obligations. The Law would require broad powers to be given to designated supervisory authorities to ensure safe and effective use of AI systems and intervene where necessary. These powers would include carrying out conformity assessments of high-risk AI systems, requesting additional information from AI operators, and imposing sanctions in case of violation. The Law further sets out sanctions for specific violations. Deploying prohibited AI systems carries a fine of up to TRY 35 million or 7% of annual turnover, general violations of AI operator obligations carry a fine of up to TRY 15 million or 3% of annual turnover, and the provision of false information in relation to AI carries a fine of up to TRY 7.5 million or 1.5% of annual turnover.
